Theme Thursdays ~ Weddings in Uniform!

The majority of military weddings take place in military chapels or academy grounds. However, if you wish to have it elsewhere; you must inform your installation.

Like with any other venue required for your ceremony and reception, you have to book in advance and plan ahead.  Although no fee is charged, a donation is expected as a gesture of thanks.

Generally the flowers, candelabra and other décor are arranged by the Chapel but these rules vary across the country and some couples are able to make their own plans.

Traditionally, the bride, groom or both will dress in military uniform and although it’s not mandatory, it is customary for them to walk under the Arch of Sabers or Swords (dependant on the whether you are Army or Naval) after the ceremony. This ensures the newlyweds a safe passage to their new life together.

This memorable ceremony takes place outside the church or chapel consisting  of 6 to 8 officers with a head usher issuing the commands, starting with ‘Form Arch’ or ‘Center face’.  Detouring from tradition, it has become the norm for the last two officers to block the couple demanding they kiss before completing the walk. The use of the sword doesn’t stop there as the couple also use it to cut their wedding cake too!

Check out some of these gorgeous military couples on their big day!

*Melt my heart*

You know what....there's something about a man in uniform

~Tip Tuesdays~ Choosing your bridal bouquet!

Kitchener Wedding Planner PlanningYes we all have our favourite blooms and colours but is that enough to select your bouquet?

You will be carrying this as part of your outfit for most of the day so it deserves some special attention and consideration.

Where does one start to build this accessory?

Here are a few tips that will hopefully result in you creating your perfect bunch of floral beauties!

Know your budget- This is important to discuss earlier on so your florist can create and adapt a design to suit your financial capabilities.

Visual Inspiration give your florist an insight to what you want and discuss colour palette options. Consider your wedding theme and current trends you might want to incorporate.

Kitchener Wedding Planner Planning  Kitchener Wedding Planner Planning

Complement your dress - show your florist a picture of your wedding gown so you can reflect the details, style and shape but don’t steal the lime light from your dress by going over the top.

Kitchener Wedding Planner Planning Kitchener Wedding Planner Planning

Colour - it is important to highlight the colours in your dress. Getting the right shades together with the right bloom is an art. Take swatches to your florist if possible.

Size and shape – believe it or not your frame dictates your bouquet to enhance your figure and dress. Petite brides should go with teardrop shaped bouquets or a small round posy to keep you in proportion. The taller bride should distract the attention from their height with a larger bouquet.

Tis the season – some flowers are not available all year round or are really expensive. Go with the seasonal flowers make it easier to source and less expensive.

Kitchener Wedding Planner Planning Kitchener Wedding Planner Planning

Kitchener Wedding Planner Planning Kitchener Wedding Planner Planning

Personalize – Maybe a flower that has meaning like the ones he brought you on your first date.  A family heirloom brooch, lace from an old gown or just add something different to reflect your personality. (remember it doesn’t all have to be floral!)

Kitchener Wedding Planner Planning Kitchener Wedding Planner Planning

Bridesmaid’s bouquets – consider coordinating it with the brides or a similar smaller version.  You can diversify it by contrasting the colours or how about a simple single stem?

 Kitchener Wedding Planner Planning

Holding the masterpiece – for a picture perfect posture it looks better in one hand below the hip and slightly away from your dress. (Never hold it at chest level!)

To toss or preserve – you can opt for the traditions of a bouquet toss or keep your flowers.

  Kitchener Wedding Planner Planning

Whatever you choose, remember to keep a flow throughout your celebrations.  You don't want to have a feel about your reception that is disconnected.

You may need to have a second set of eyes to give you some feedback because we know that the process can become "blurry" and overwhelming after looking at it so long!  That's where a friend or wedding coordinator can offer their advice.  You may end up choosing something that you never thought you would!

Regardless, just enjoy the journey!

Happy Planning!

Inspiration Fridays – On trend with ‘something old’ - 1920s theme!

Do you love vintage and all the glam of the 1920’s? You are not alone as this popular theme is appearing at more weddings. With a remake of The Great Gatsby coming to our screens soon, many couples are looking to mirror the era and style for their big day. You will see the flappers and dapper grooms alongside the crystal decanters, whiskey and all that jazz!

The Art deco, jewellery adornments and feathers exuded decadence from the women and the men showed their sophistication with their suit jackets, waistcoats and bowler hats.

And for you Downton Abbey fans less roaring 20s and more classy garden tea parties…

Happy Planning Ladies!

~ Theme Thursdays ~ Keeping it low key!

Not everyone dreams of throwing a big wedding, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be everything they could have wished for.  For some couples getting married to the one they love is special enough without the grand gestures of an extravagant affair. Most low key weddings are intimate and include your closest friends and family in a small venue. What more do you need right? (Ok maybe some food, drinks and music) then all should be good!

We found these three real life low key weddings that looked amazing in more ways than one. It is evident from all the smiles in the pictures that the couples truly enjoyed their big day filled with happiness.

Offbeat bride brings you Kim and Greg’s garden party in Manhattan.

An outdoor ceremony for less than 60 guests in a neighborhood garden and Kim designed almost everything herself from her dress to décor.

Two paths lead to a central pagoda where the two joined to say their vows before a friend who was also a wedding officiant. They sealed the deal with a kiss before heading back down the aisle with the band played Greg’s favorite song. Then it was to a lounge for drinks and nibbles.

A RockNRollBride wedding from London, UK brings us inexpensive and cheerful from high street outfits to DIY flowers and a pub lunch for 20 guests.  The photography is gorgeous and makes the day looks way more expensive then it was!

Last but not least this couple’s sweet and simple family get together to eat burgers on the bride’s 30th birthday at the groom’s childhood home. This is certainly a small cozy wedding to remember from Glamour

~Trendy Mondays~ Food Trucks at your Wedding!

If you enjoyed our ‘Interactive Food Stations’ feature this will definitely be up your street!  Food trucks at weddings will be trending in 2013 as more couples opt for this budget savvy and unique catering idea to feed their guests.  Forget your stereotypical festival food on a chuck wagon, these food trucks are serving gourmet dishes to tantalize everybody’s taste buds!

Here are some things to consider when planning for this awesome idea!

Calculate number of guests per truck – Food trucks main purpose is ‘fast food’ but it will still take time for all your guests to get served.  Have at least one truck per 75 guests so no one goes hungry!  If you are considering this option for a late night treat, then you may only need one truck.  Not everyone is a "late night snack" kind of person.

Kitchener Wedding Planner Planning

Time of year – remember people will have to line up for their food so make sure it is in comfortable weather, not too hot or cold and definitely choose a food truck to compliment the climate.  For example you can’t go wrong with an ice cream truck in summer!

Kitchener Wedding Planner Planning

Kitchener Wedding Planner Planning

Seating – If you are having the food truck as your main reception lunch or dinner then perhaps consider devising a seating area for people to sit down and eat.  However, if you are looking at a more casual affair like an after party or cocktail hour style, then set it up in a way to encourage your guests to mingle with access to cutlery and napkins (provided by the food trucks).

Kitchener Wedding Planner Planning Kitchener Wedding Planner Planning

Match your theme – You want to make sure the truck fits in with the décor of your wedding.  So like everything else do your research and find one that suits you.  Small and quaint or large and extravagant or something in between, there are so many choices!

Kitchener Wedding Planner Planning

Menu – Have a varied selection of food and be as adventurous as you dare.  Food trucks will often take a fun approach on appetizers and create small bites.  You can get some high end dishes nowadays.

Kitchener Wedding Planner Planning

Last but not least....

Parking – This is probably the main concern but is not a deterrent for food truck lovers but do make sure a parking space is available and that the trucks are insured!

It’s fun, inexpensive, and suitable for formal or casual dining whilst supporting small local businesses! We’re sold on the idea, how about you?  Need convincing then check out these “Truckin’ treats” found in the GTA as featured in thestar.com Food and Wine segment.

~Trendy Mondays~ Interactive Food Stations!

With everyone being on trend nowadays through the influence of social media and exposure to fantastic ideas, is it enough to just have good caterers?  For some the traditional three-course sit down meal is fine and a lovely option for your wedding lunch or dinner.  After all good cuisine speaks for itself!

For the more experimental and quirky types however, we would like to welcome you to a plethora of aesthetically pleasing and entertaining ways to serve your food.  The groom might well take an interest in this aspect of the planning too, as they say ‘the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach!’  If not for the main part of your reception then consider it as a late night option for the after-party perhaps.

From varied presentation to the interactive bars that are becoming more and more popular, feast your eyes on these ideas.  Mini versions of anything are so cute and a tasty mouthful!

The main purpose of "food stations" is to have the guests freely mix and mingle while getting their food!  Sampling the different options that you have laid out for them in a relaxed environment and not restricting them to "waiting it out" until their table number is called will be well received by your guests!  Setting up a lounge type reception space with a few cocktail style tables and some couches will only enhance the concept of the food stations.  We're getting hungy just thinking about all the possibilities!  Here are some more ideas to tempt your palette!

Inspiration Fridays ~ Destination Weddings!

Kitchener Wedding Planner PlanningFor all types of couples, a destination wedding is becoming the popular option to tie the knot. What is better than having your nuptials in an exotic location at potentially a lesser cost than a traditional wedding affair, right?!

An intimate wedding with your nearest and dearest with a lot less stress involved. There is a place for every style and budget from gorgeous sunny beach weddings to beautiful mountain tops to places like Europe!  The world is your oyster!

We are sharing some tips today to help you decide whether Destination is the option for you!

How about a little French Polynesia????? .......My oh my does that sound amazing!

Kitchener Wedding Planner Planning

Or some mountain scenery?

Kitchener Wedding Planner Planning

A little Paris maybe?  Oui, Oui!

Kitchener Wedding Planner Planning

Or is a grand majestic castle on the list of contenders?

Kitchener Wedding Planner Planning

Now here are some tips to begin planning your destination wedding away!

  1. Although you won't have a huge guest list, it is still wise to have a tentative headcount when choosing your destination + venue.
  2. Plan in advance, especially if you want to block, book and get discounted rates at resorts.
  3. Ensure all those invited have valid passports + vacation time.  It is wise to put as much detail on your Save-the-dates as possible so they can arrange themselves to participate.  You wouldn't want one of your bridal party to not be able to attend!
  4. Two-in-one!  The wedding is likely to be at a romantic getaway so why not stay and have your honeymoon there too?  For most of your guests it is probably also a vacation opportunity so make the most of "holiday-ing" with your friends + family and stay a little longer!
  5. Research the weather of your destination to prevent any surprises.  Definitely choose your wedding attire accordingly.
  6. Know and become familiar with the laws and legal requirements of getting married in the chosen country.
  7. Use recommended + reputable vendors only!  If you are not able to fly out and do a little reconnaisance yourselves then perhaps see if there is an event coordinator included in your wedding package that can do the leg work and get feedback to you.
  8. Do not check-in anything you will want on the big day.... carry-on with you just in case.
  9. Your guests' attendance is a gift in itself, so perhaps don't have a gift registry.  Also be considerate of your guests varying budgets and provide options!  As a gesture why not throw a Welcome dinner to thank them!
  10. If you can afford it, use a wedding planner who specializes in destination weddings.  They are more likely to know the ins and outs of getting married abroad and will know vendors etc.. to ensure a smooth running event!

Happy Planning!

~Inspiration Fridays ~ Boho Chic Weddings!

Kitchener Wedding Planning PlannerWe having been pinning a lot of wedding bouquets as of late and they have all had a “boho” vibe to them.... so it inspired us to look into a full on boho wedding!

Boho normally has connotations of being unconventional; taking influences from the hippies. This instantly makes me think of being lovey-dovey, bare foot and wearing flowers in your hair!  This style also bares some similarities to country chic and both have that dreamy, earthy, natural feel good factor.

It has been the style of female fashion made popular by celebrities that has gone round and is set to make a comeback this Spring! Get a head start and plan your Boho Chic wedding from the inspiration below.

These brides look beautiful with their floral head bands with a simple hairstyle, and lovely laced dresses. Effortlessly and naturally gorgeous!

And for the finer details....

So the dress seems obvious, but what do you do for décor for a Boho wedding?  Why not try to recreate the “hippy camp” ambience with tents, dream catchers and hand-picked delicate flowers in small jars and vases.  Add candles for that romantic mood too and a modern twist to the theme with the dessert table.

~ Theme Thursdays ~ The Reception Lounge

The reception lounge is another trend predicted to be big in 2013.  It offers a space for guests to mingle, eat, kick back and relax. With a more informal feel, it provides the perfect setting for cocktails and finger food. You can create an ambience to suit your style; be adventurous and really get your guests to interact and make the night a memorable one. Be it indoors or outdoors there are so many designs to choose from. Why not break from the tradition of a sit down meal? At least you won’t have to deal with the stress of a seating chart. (We all know that’s a burden that we can do without!)

Here are some of our favourite lounge ideas taken from The Knot:

How about an outdoor mingling spot???

Whatever your style we're positive you will come up with an idea that you will be thrilled with!
