Wedding Tradition or Superstition?

Ever wonder why it's bad luck to see the bride before the Big Day?  Here are a few answers to those wedding traditions and superstitions!

Let's start with the basics... have you ever wondered why your ring finger was always known as just that?  According to history, the Ancient Greeks were convinced that the ring finger was connected to your heart through a specific nerve.  This means that your heart will always be with this ring that your beloved has given to you. Pretty cool right?

What about seeing the bride before the special day? Believe it or not, this tradition was not always as romantic as it may seem today!  Back when arranged marriages were the only way of getting married to one another, the bride were to be kept almost a secret to ensure that the groom did not back out of the deal. If he were find out her identity or not find her attractive, the marriage could be tarnished and the 'business transaction', as it were to be known back then, would be off.

For those of you who dream about getting carried through your front door by your "knight in shining armour", this tradition actually started a long time ago within the Western European community.  The original idea was to carry the bride into their new home to ward off any evil spirits.  They also believed that the groom should carry the bride over the threshold to prevent the bride from tripping over the door into the new house, bringing bad luck into the home and marriage!  Interesting... I think I like the idea of being picked up after a long day of wearing heels, right ladies?

Now as for other traditions, like taking the garter from the bride, this originally came from Medieval Times when there were to be a witness of the marriage. The witness would take the garter from the consummation of the wedding and show this as evidence that it actually happened. Nowadays, the groom is intended to take this from the bride but it seems that the tradition is still very much entertaining!  For some inspiration in this department try visiting Bridal Garters!

Ever heard that rain is seen as good luck for your wedding day?  This tradition sparked from the Hindu Religion as being good luck and a sign of a strong marriage. The reason for this came from the idea of trying to untie a wet knot and seeing that it was harder than untying a dry one. Seeing as how we use the term 'tying the knot' quite often, this tradition seems to be quite accurate.

Above all of these traditions that have been used for generations and generations, it is always nice to have those of your own! Traditions don't always have to 'foresee' your marital future but can bring loving families together! Besides, that's what wedding days are for!

Have Your Cake & Eat It Too!

So you've gotten an idea of how many of your friends and family are going to be attending your wedding celebrations and now it's time to move onto the next step... Feeding them all.

Kitchener Wedding Planner

Not only do you need to calculate how many meals you are going to need to provide but how much cake you want your guests to be able to indulge in as well.  Cake size can be up to you and your loving partner to see if you want to give everyone a slice or if it's just for those eager guests that can have first come first serve. To help you get started...click the link to view a simple Cake Serving Guide!

If you are looking to give all of your loved ones a piece of your beautiful cake, you are going to need a frame of reference as to how big of a cake you will need!

Kitchener Wedding Planner  Kitchener Wedding Planner

First things first, decide if you are having a round wedding cake or a square shaped one. Surprisingly this makes a difference with the amount of slices you will have. If you are choosing a round wedding cake it may give you less delicious slices than the square shaped size, but this is also dependent on the size of your family and friend group and how big of slices your guests prefer.

  Kitchener Wedding Planner

If you have a more intimate party you will need approximately a 6 to 8 inch round cake or cake tower to feed about 30 people. This will make sure that everyone attending your magical day will get to enjoy the dessert as much as they enjoyed the dinner!

Kitchener Wedding Planner  Kitchener Wedding Planner

If you have a slightly larger ceremony and are planning to feed a few more hungry mouths, a 10 to 12 inch round cake tower will feed around 40-60 guests. If you are partial to square cake towers, this size will feed approximately 50-70 people. Remember to consider how big you are cutting your sizes. A standard cake slice is 1 inch by 2 inches so make sure you are putting that into your vision of your perfect wedding cake.

Kitchener Wedding Planner  Kitchener Wedding Planner

What if you have a slightly LARGER party than this? Try looking at a 14 to 16 inch cake! With a round cake tower this size you can feed up to 100 guests! If you are just over that limit a 14 to 16 inch square shaped cake will deliver cake to about 130 guests, ensuring that everyone is happy with their scrumptious piece of heaven.

All of these cake sizes are some great head starts to figuring out the finishing touches on your special day. All you need to do next is find a baker that can make these dreams come true! Stay tuned to find out tips on how to cross that one off of your list as well!

"I'm Ready for my Close-up!" ~ Wedding Photography

Wondering where to cut back on some costs for your wedding? One suggestion is to not skip out on documenting your magical day.  Either with a professional photographer or videographer, you will be more than relieved that you have all of these wonderful memories saved for you and your loved ones.

Kitchener Wedding Planner

Professionals not only have a knack for finding those perfect moments between you and your partner but they have an excellent way of catching those candid moments of your family and friends!  Nothing is funnier than looking back on the celebration and seeing the memories that you may not have caught the first time.

Kitchener Wedding Planner

One thing to consider when shopping around for a photographer or videographer is seeing how quickly they have the footage done for you!  If it fits into your budget, see about same day photos or videos!  Some brides prefer to show the “behind-the-scenes” footage the same day during the reception.

A cute idea can be showing the footage of the bride and groom getting ready for the day with their wedding party!  You can ask for the photographer or videographer to create a certain type of mood to go along with this idea so you can have a more ‘funky’ and ‘comical’ vibe or more of a ‘touching’ and ‘sentimental’ feel to it!  Whatever you prefer!

Kitchener Wedding Planner

 Kitchener Wedding Planner

To the few brides that are lucky enough to have a friend or family member that can do this task for them, be sure to make clear what type of mood you are trying to capture! You want to make sure that taking all of that time to choose the theme for your wedding is not lost in the pictures or videos when you look back on them.

Kitchener Wedding Planner

Another thing to really be aware about is the pricing with photographers and videographers! Even though this will probably be a larger chunk of your budget it is well worth it in most cases! Just be sure that you are being smart with your selection… find the happy medium between paying a cheaper price for good quality and paying top dollar for something that you may think is overpriced. Remember, this is YOUR budget and you are the deciding factor!

You know... rain isn't such a bad thing!  Some consider it good luck on your wedding day :)

Family, Friends & Kids? Finding the Balance

Spending time with family is not only a great time to reunite during the holidays but also at your wedding!  Coming together is a beautiful time to reunite, but are you worried about the children?  Make sure you and your partner have discussed the balance of having your friends and family and their little ones on your special day.

For some brides, there is always the option of asking your loved ones to leave their little angels at home, but for others that may be a bit more difficult if that means there are a lot to exclude. Deciding whether or not to invite them may stir up some mixed feelings, so make sure to always have a back-up plan if your friends and family feel differently!

One brilliant idea to consider is to hire a babysitting service for during the cocktail and  reception hours!  This way, your friends and family can enjoy their night knowing that their kids are safe and sound.  You can also order some extra "kid-friendly" food for during the eating hours so that the children are well fed and happy while their parents dance the night away!

Some "kid-friendly" finger foods include items such as pizza or hotdogs.  This way napkins can come to the rescue and you do not have to dirty up too many extra plates!  Another great type of food to order for the little ones would be pasta!  Mac n' cheese is a kid favourite and always makes them happy if there is more to go around.

Another thing to add would be to have plenty of games to entertain the children during this joyous night. Simple games include colouring books or puzzles to help pass the time for them while you have the night you've always dreamed of.

For this magical idea, make sure that you have a separate room to have this service in. For some couples, if the reception is on family grounds this can be held within a nearby home of your family's. If your reception is somewhere different, for example, a banquet hall, make sure to ask if there is a separate side room to put the babysitting service! This way, you and your loved ones can have a worry-free night and make some memories you will never forget!

For some brides, it is very important that the children be involved with their special day which can always be fun! Having the playful spirit in the air always helps with some good laughs and great fun! Just be sure to have a back-up plan if something were to turn sour with one of the children if anything were to upset them. A great idea would be providing crayons to help occupy them during the reception. Sometimes a wedding event can seem longer to them than to us so be sure to watch out for when they start to get tired and change moods.

Regardless of whether you have the children with you on your special day or maybe just a little out of arms reach, everyone will be sure to have the most magical night celebrating your love for you and your partner.

Until next time...

Wedding Favours for your Favourites!

Worried that your wedding favours won't get used once your guests leave?
Not to fret! With these simple ideas, your friends and family will only be wanting more!

When choosing party favours make sure they are relatable to not only your theme but also to the season!  It may not make sense if you are giving out small jam jars if your wedding is in the middle of winter.  Always consider external factors too!  If you are having a rustic outdoor wedding, incorporating natural elements into your gifts is a creative way to keep your theme tied into the idea.  For example, beautiful cloth bags with 'outdoor-sy' aspects are an exceptional way to give your guests just what they want and make sure your vision is creatively displayed.

Another great way to select your perfect gift for your guests is by asking yourself... 'what do people use often?'.  Seems like such a simple question but it is such a helpful way to make sure your gifts are being used as well as admired!

A few examples of gifts that people can use are personalized wine corks. These simple party favours can be used over and over again and will remind your loving friends and family of that beautiful day you all spent together! Putting you and your partners' initials or the wedding date on the top is a lovely touch to make this simple item a timeless present.
Another example could be small and delicate candles for your favours. The scent of these beautiful gifts are sure to make your guests smell the aroma of love every time they light them.

Amongst these great ideas, think about adding a little humour to the mix!  Nothing says 'fun' like a quick, clever joke to go along with the party favours!  Simple but witty sayings will make sure your guests get a kick out of their thoughtful gifts and leave everyone smiling even after your special day.

Never forget to keep in mind your budget.  The last thing you want is to have spent your money excessively in this area.  Shop the "going out of business" and after Christmas sales.  Buy items in bulk.  Take advantage of online resources such as EBAY and Kijiji.  Always be on the lookout for great deals  There's nothing wrong with that!  If you start early enough.... you will have plenty of time to do the legwork and find something that is cost effective and perfect for your guests.
Here are some more fun ideas that you may not have considered.

Love this one!  It has such a "down home" feel!  Total Southern comfort!
Perfect for that outdoor celebration!

For a little touch of chic... why not mini champagne?  If it fits your budget it can be a contender!

Why not some tea or coffee?  Everyone loves that!  Head out to a local market or grab some Fair Trade Coffee.  Package a single serving in a recyclable bag or box.  Keep it eco friendly!

Just remember, your gifts are such a nice touch to the celebration that they should be filled with lots of love and joy as well! If you need help with any of these party favours, ask for advice from others to get the inside scoop on what they might want!
Never a bad idea to combine a few ideas to create the best wedding favours for your lovely day!

Wedding Planning ~ Deciding Between Plated Dinner or Buffet Style

We can all agree that your special day is going to be profoundly perfect, but between every wedding there is always a difference of how formal the actual event will be.

When deciding between a plated dinner and a buffet to feed your eager guests, make sure you are considering these few tips before choosing…

What’s on the Menu?

Deciding what items to include on the menu for your guests is a lengthier process than you may think!  A variety of options are put before you that will have a hard time choosing!

A potential deciding factor for buffet vs. plated could be the number of entrees you want to have.  If you are looking to have several entrée options if you are not sure about dietary preferences… then buffet style may be the better option for you.  If you are planning a “standing reception” or cocktail-style event, then the menu will most likely consist of a greater selection of appetizers or “stations”.  This style also lends to the buffet category.

If you are wanting to stay more on the formal side.. then the sit-down plated dinner is the perfect choice.   This allows for more table conversation between guests, eliminates the wait time at the buffet line and a more consistent experience for all of your wedding guests.  The one downside of this option is that the numbers have to be pretty spot on with regards to guests since the meals would be portioned and plated for them.  You may have to do a lot of followup for those guests that did not rsvp.  Things get a little complicated when you have guests that did not reply and attend anyway or those that respond saying they will attend and don't.  You run into the possibility of all the guests not having the same experience.

Deciding on a Magic Number

Make sure you have a set guest list in order to determine how many people you are going to be serving!  This is crucial when you are juggling between the two styles to ensure that everyone gets fed what he or she wants and on time.

The average time waiting in line for a buffet is about 30-40 minutes for just around 100 guests.

If your guest list is a more intimate one and does not exceed that number, then the buffet style is something to definitely consider!  However, if your attendees surpass that then it may be more efficient for your hungry guests to have a plated meal.  Remember to not forget the tone of your event.  What feeling are you trying to convey?... this plays a part in this decision too!

Special Considerations

When choosing your preferred style of catering, make sure you take into account how many ‘special orders’ you may have.

In a lot of cases, buffets can be beneficial to avoid any allergies or dislikes with the food choices. Each guest is able to choose what they would like to eat and are taking their restrictions into their own hands.

If you are feeling ambitious... go one step further and try this little DIY project!

Food Allergy Placecards!  How cute are these:)

With an idea of how large or intimate your special day is going to be, you can now focus on the smaller details!

Now remember soon-to-be-brides; all of these decisions do come with a price as any magical day does.  Make sure that above all, your choices are reflecting your budget as well!   If you and your wallet are happy than there is nothing holding you back from having your fairy-tale come true!

Until next time!

"Spring Into Planning!"

As exciting as it is to have the beautiful weather finally making an appearance, it is even MORE exciting to get into the mood of planning your special day!

If you have a Spring wedding planned or have a few weddings to attend in the upcoming months, you can be sure that these are the colours you will be seeing for Spring 2014!

Pastels like pale peach, radiant orchid and cherry blossom pink seem to be a trend we are seeing this Spring because of their light and fresh feel…who said only the weather had to be bright and blossoming?!

These beautiful colours not only mirror the beautiful outdoors in its process of blooming but it also helps us get back into the mood of designing your exceptional day!

When you are choosing between these lovely Spring colours, step out of your comfort zone and try pairing them with charming soft shimmers of silver or gold! The twinkling aspect of these metallic colours will not only add a variety of colour to balance out the theme but it will also help the focus colour POP!

But remember everyone….... moderation is KEY! Too much of one colour can overthrow the theme and make things feel too overwhelming!  Make sure to ask for help if you are unsure about how much colour or sparkle to add to your stunning setting so you can ensure that your day is as perfect as you have always imagined!

Above all, have fun with it!  These colours should reflect your dream day and make you feel just as happy as we are about this beautiful Spring weather letting love be in the air!

We also have the pleasure of working with our newest clients Shermeen + Chris!  Can't wait to get started on this one!  Starting right from the beginning of the process .... love that!  So many ideas that I can't wait to share.  This one is a little unique.... not going to share JUST yet!

Now to our February goals!  January was very tough to be honest... Lots of things going on beyond our control and you know, sometimes that happens and that's okay.  Re-focus and re-adjust.  We did get started on our "healthy lifestyle" goal... for a bit... then we kinda lost our way!  It's so hard when you're the sit-in-front-of-the-fireplace-with-some-comfort-food-and-fuzzy-socks kinda person!  Blogging has begun again!  So excited to talk about all things wedding with you all.  Stay tuned!  Finally ... the goal that excites us (along with anything wedding *wink wink*) our vacation saving has begun!  We are in desperate need of some downtime with the family and hubby and I are so determined to make it a reality this year.  Now to sign off with a few words that we are trying to live by ourselves ...... courtesy of the great Bill Cosby.  We hope that they inspire you, in whatever aspect of life that it applies.

P.S. ~ Do you have something special planned for Valentine's Day?  It's right around the corner!

Have a wonderful week everyone!!!

Seeing Shades of Pink!

When you first think of "pink" you may picture a shade something along the lines of Hubba Bubba bubble gum.... at least that is what comes to mind for me!

Well that's not all that this wonderful colour is all about!!!

In the world of wedded bliss, the gloves come off and we can see that there is so much more to PINK than simply Hubba Bubba Bubble gum!

Rings

Why not start where it all begins...  the *sparkle*!  Whether it's a solid pink stone or just an accent, the shade gives your ring a certain unique touch that sets it apart from the traditional engagement ring.  Gentlemen you've got quite the task ahead of you!  There's so much to choose from.  You better know your lady well :)

Flowers

Now that we have the bling taken care of... let's talk about something we love.  The loveliness that is flowers!  Whether they be the romantic type or have that wow factor, they are a statement that is made starting right at the ceremony.  A favourite these days are the peony (*sigh* ... so romantic!).  Lush and beautiful it is perfect for that romantic celebration that will just take everyone's breath away.... such a feel-good choice for your florals!

Now if you've chosen pink as part of your colour palette, it does not mean you have to saturate your whole day with it.  You can have it incorporated as a subtle detail with different textures.  For example your bouquets... a hint of pink will be enough to create the feeling you are hoping to achieve.  Such lovely combinations are shown below... don't rule anything out :)

We will be back with more pink wedding goodness...

For your "fix" until then.. check out our "Pinks and Pearls" inspiration board!

Enjoy!

January 2014 - Here we go!

We took some time at the end of December to re-charge and spend time with family (and boy do we have a lot of family!).  A much needed break in order for us to be at the top of our game for our clients in the new year.

In the next little while we will be looking back at some of our client weddings from 2013 and sharing their celebrations with you! Hope you enjoy them :)  You like something? Let us know!

Now that this new year of 2014 is underway….new beginnings are as well.

We all head down the path of "making resolutions" for things we will try to do better, change something about ourselves or just look at life differently.  A fresh start if you will.

The list can get pretty big…pretty fast!!

Just remember to take it in stride… you will have your days where things just don't fall into place.... and that's perfectly okay.   You're healthy and happy and that is the most important thing.

On that note… we just wanted to share with all of you lovelies some of our personal and business goals for the year ahead.

  • Be successful in pursuing the healthier lifestyle that I'm always TRYING to fit into my schedule ~ i.e. ….going to the gym!
  • Determine key goals for the business in 2014
  • Begin to clean + organize the "black hole of an extra bedroom" that has been put on the back burner for a while
  • Read more ~ there are so many books in my home library that are calling my name!
  • Make some progress on my "girl cave"

We hope we inspire you to take charge and cross some things off of your list!

Some of our January to-do's include:

~ Start that healthier lifestyle… make room for some serious gym time

~ Get back into the blogging groove - we have some much we want to talk about!

~ Save for that vacation that we always "talk about"

~ Cut my caffeine  - this one's going to be tough.

What is your "list"?  Share with us.......We would love to hear it!

Wishing you a fabulous New Year!

Wow!  I can't believe that another year is coming to an end.  It's amazing how quickly the past year has flown by.  Oh what a year it's been!

Usually at this time I am winding down and taking time to set goals for the coming year.  Both personal and business.

As a wife, mother and entrepreneur it is very important to me to balance everything as best I can so that all the "gears of the clock" function together.

For those who know me… you know I love to keep busy!  Don't get me wrong, I love to have fun and unwind!  Boy do I ever!  But when I get down to business… there's no stopping me :)

I love what I do and I hope I can continue doing it for as long as possible :)

A big thank you to all of our Style & Elegance couples!  It was an absolute pleasure to work with you all and wish you nothing but love + happiness in your married life.

Thanks to my family for tolerating my, at times, CRAZY schedule and for your patience!

Have a WONDERFUL + AH-MAZING New Year everyone!  Make it a good one!
